About Cordova

Cordova has a tradition of exploration that makes it a fitting place for adventure. In the late 1880's, explorers crossed the Copper River Delta and headed into the interior of Alaska, finding the salmon and copper resources that became integral to Cordova's development.
Cordova Coastal Outfitters sponsors the annual 4th of July Boat Races at the Community Picnic, where fresh Copper River Salmon is grilled up for free. Other special summer events include the Copper River Delta Shorebird Festival, Copper River Wild! Salmon weekend, and PWS Science Center's Environmental Science Camp.

Cordova's "off the beaten path" charm makes it worth the extra effort to get here. Travel by boat or plane to get to Cordova--transport is available aboard the Alaska Marine Highway System (800-642-0066) from both Valdez and Whittier. There is daily jet and commuter service on Alaska Airlines (800-426-0333) and ERA Aviation from Anchorage.

Visitors to Cordova enjoy the diverse wilderness of two distinct habitats. The Copper River Delta to the southeast, offers glacial vistas and wetlands replete with waterfowl, beavers, brown and black bears and moose. Prince William Sound to the west of Cordova is home to a host of seabirds, a rich intertidal life and a bounty of marine life including sea otters, sea lions, porpoises, orca and humpback whales.

While you're here we encourage you to enjoy the other attractions Cordova has to offer: flightseeing, rafting, hiking, fishing charters, lovely accommodations and great seafood. If you need assistance in booking activities or lodging just ask.

Cordova is in the Chugach National Forest. Local hiking trails, public use cabins and picnic areas are managed by the US Forest Service Cordova office . For over 10 years Cordova Coastal Outfitters has operated as an outfitter guide service within the Forest with a Special Use Permit from the Forest Service. The public use cabins are great destinations and we offer many services just for cabin users (land and water transport, gear packages).

Alaska River Expeditions: a local company with a great reputation and lots of fun to offer. They also operate a camp ground at mile 12 on the Copper River Hwy.

Auklet Charters: A local vessel available for natural history and research charters in Prince William Sound. Specializing in birding and multi day trips. Operated by long time Prince William Sound residents and highly recommended.

Prince William Sound Science Center: The environmental education Summer Camp programs are wonderful. It’s also a research center with many PWS oceanographic projects. Their deck/foyer provides interpretive information for harbor activities and local marine life.

Copper River Delta Shorebird Festival: This year’s festival is May 8-11, 2008. Great for bird enthusiasts. May is an exciting time to be in Prince William Sound when life is returning in the form of birds and marine mammals. We offer special birding charters and kayak tours during this time – posted thru the chamber office/Festival headquarters.
